Is Hastings stuck in a rut? Are we settling for "good enough?"

Recently I have been wondering if Hastings is stuck in somewhat of a rut. I understand that the national economy is not doing well, and that this has had an effect on the state, as well as the cities.

My fear, however, is that Hastings seems to be riding out the storm, and not necessarily being as aggressive as it could be to attract new businesses, encourage small business growth, and maintain what we currently have.

The most-recent example is the new Salvation Army store. While I realize that there is a certain segment of the population that appreciates the presence of deep discount stores, it just seems like we already have our share (namely Goodwill), and continuing to add more of this type of business does little to attract more upscale shops and restaurants.

It would be great to see a beautification effort take place in Hastings, at least on the main streets through town. Trimming the weeds in all medians, maintaining the landscaping, and reducing the number of signs in town would make a big difference.

Yes, it's true the economy is tough. But if we are only waiting until things get better, it seems like we'll always be just a bit behind cities like Apple Valley, Cottage Grove, Rosemount, Eagan, Woodbury and others. (You know the list, they are the cities many of us travel to when we'd like to eat out or shop).

That is something I have been thinking myself. The problem I foresee is Hastings needs a coalition effort among all businesses, citizens, and the city with working towards the same plan. I believe we shouldn't be focusing Hastings in away in which we focus our efforts in one key area. This needs to be a citywide effort heading towards the same goal.

I know it can be done, its a matter of doing it.
