Given the current economic conditions, cities across Minnesota and America are constantly finding new and creative ways to attract businesses, retain existing employers, attract new residents, and encourage tourism.But what about Hastings? Five years ago I would have said no to the question of locking my car doors in Hastings.

Is the "sonic screen" a good idea for Hastings?

The idea sounds appealing - simply install devices that emit a screeching sound that only children and teenagers can hear, turn them on at night in our parks, and voila - vandalism problem solved. Right?

Vandals won't affect Hastings' community spirit

By now, most of us have heard about the vandalism in the 1800 block of Forest that took place here in Hastings on Dec. 1. Apparently, in the dark of night, someone or a group of individuals felt they needed to spray paint racist and hateful words and symbols on the side of homes and vehicles.


My first reaction to this was surprise. It seems out of character for something like this to happen in the Hastings community. My second reaction was anger. How dare someone do this…
